Piranhas Showing up in the Yukon River

BBC News reports that affluent tourists from the Lower 48 have been fishing with piranhas due to lower costs. Authorities claim they were finessing the system, but now ICE and the police are making arrests. To date, there have been 15 deaths and 50 injuries in Alaska. Officials state that all involved will face arrest arrested by December 29, 2026. Meanwhile, communities along the Yukon River and its tributaries such Koyukuk, Ruby, and Huslia are being affected by lower salmon runs and “no swim” advisories are in effect for the summer.
