Slavery in the 20th century affected America today from racism that still lasts today. It is affecting America because the past slavery influenced people today to be racist. Today African-Americans are not as wealthy and not that smart and are in the poorer parts of cities where the crime rate is high. Some white people are still racist but they can’t show it in public or they will get caught and probably go to jail for hate crimes. Some African Americans are affected because there grandparents weren’t allowed to swim in pools because it was segregated and so nobody learned how to swim so some black people don’t know how to swim today.
African slaves first got to America in 1619 with a big boat and that is how they got in America. Lots of slaves were sold to other countries for money and lots of slaves stayed in America. More and more slaves kept on coming to America over the years and they all started piling up in the states. They were put to forced labor work and didn’t get paid and didn’t eat good food. Some slaves tried to escape plantations and some escaped and went North but lots of them got caught and got whipped and put back to work.
Slavery ended in 1865 In America after the civil war and they made slavery illegal. The people of the Northern states was against slavery and the South was with slavery and they met their differences and went to war over it. The North ended up winning and they abolished slavery for good and that’s how slavery ended in North America. This day has come to be known as Juneteenth, a combination of June and 19th. It is also called Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, and “it is the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.”
Today there is still modern slaves but they aren’t public and everyone can’t see them. The American Civil Liberties Union says: “Human trafficking is modern-day slavery. Like other forms of slavery, it is a lucrative commercial activity that exploits the poor and vulnerable.” They are hidden by evil people and they get sold on the black market and don’t see their families anymore. They usually get kidnapped by a group of people who put them in a vehicle and bring them to the hidden place to get sold. The kidnapped people probably get put on drugs while they are unconscious so they don’t wake up and try to escape. They get put to forced labor or they will get killed. They don’t eat good food and barely survive the days.
